Debra Bauman

Debra Bauman is Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, the nation’s largest nonprofit alcohol and drug treatment provider. Deb is in charge of the Foundation’s technology infrastructure, software network and business applications platforms that support the foundation’s work, with a team of 70 IT staff serving 17 sites across the country. Deb brings deep experience in the technical services industry. Past roles include Group President in charge of Bank Operations and Technology for Bremer Bank; Vice President for Target Technology Services, where she was in charge of Financial Services Technology and; Chief Information Officer for Deluxe Financial Services and Chief Information Officer for Sun Country Airlines.

Deb was interviewed by Executive Branding Coach Carol Kaemmerer, a Charter member of the Women’s Health Leadership TRUST and member of its Marketing Communications Committee.

Why did you join the TRUST?

While I am experienced in technology across various industries, my role at Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is my first experience in health care and I wanted to learn more about the health care sector. When Dee Thibodeau introduced me to the TRUST, I joined right away because I could clearly see the value in the organization. I’ve recently joined the TRUST Board, providing my technical expertise, and I am the new co-chair of the Marketing Communications committee. I am pleased to take an active role in the organization.

Have you been mentored?

Yes; it was years ago, but it made a huge difference for me. Because I have always worked in a male-dominated field, I have appreciated the role modeling of strong female leaders; I’m now active in passing those lessons on to others. I have mentored women, especially women directors both in-house and through Menttium.

What is your best business advice?

Be yourself. Don’t be afraid to call attention to the elephant in the room, even when others pretend not to see it. Willingness to attack tough questions head-on makes you a very effective leader.

What inspires you?

I love being a leader and developer of people. When I see them succeed, it gives me great satisfaction. I also enjoy influencing change within organizations and being an agent of change.

What is something that not many people know about you?

I love fast cars — or put differently, I love to drive fast cars fast. I’m especially drawn to fast cars with manual transmission.

Thank you, Deb Bauman, for sharing with us, and for sharing your leadership skills with the Women's Health Leadership TRUST.
