Jill, tell us about your current work role.
I founded Johnson Consulting Services more than three decades ago, and as with every entrepreneur, I wear a variety of hats associated with my business. In addition to being the principal consultant, I am also responsible for business development, writing client reports and thought leadership materials, and public speaking.
I work with clients on the provider side of health care representing the full spectrum of care (e.g. hospitals, senior living, home health care, hospice) that want a detailed assessment of the complex environment in which they function in order to take advantage of competitive opportunities and address strategic challenges. In addition to analyzing existing data, we do qualitative work to enhance our understanding of the marketplace and offer strategies for putting what we learn into action. Our clients make significant decisions based upon our work. They value the comprehensiveness of our research, along with our analytical ability, candor, integrity, and view our objectivity as being instrumental to their organizational and financial success.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by complex challenges; cookie-cutter approaches bore me. I love working with clients who are truly interested in knowing details about how the complex marketplace in which they operate is changing and how they can be most effective in response to those changes. Of course, the clients who are interested in this level of analysis and guidance inspire me as well. One of my favorite quotes is: “When you’re going through hell, keep going.” – Winston Churchill
Tell us about your most recent book, Compounding Your Confidence.
Thanks. The book has won many awards and has been referred to as “a mentor in a book.” Confidence is a significant life skill necessary to achieving any level of personal or professional success — and it is a skill that can be learned. The book is a blueprint for confidence building and it is filled with humor, stories and wisdom. What has been surprising is that the book’s message is resonating not only with young people but also with retirees who are taking on new challenges and must build their confidence anew in novel settings. One of my favorite quotes that I included in the book is: “What truly separates successful people from those who never achieve their goals is what they do when things are hard.”
Have you been mentored?
Yes, I have a wide-ranging network of people that I call on for strategic advice on a broad range of subjects. While in corporate situations people can often identify a single mentor who has helped them advance, as an entrepreneur my experience with mentors has been less formal and has come from many people because the areas in which I have sought advice are so varied.
Why did you join the TRUST?
I’ve been a member for a very long time and I joined because the TRUST is well regarded in helping women executives in health care to connect. When I attend meetings, I see women who are my peers and past and current clients. It’s a great way to stay in touch with the health care industry because of the cross-disciplinary nature of the group.
What is something that not many people know about you?
We have raised and showed Rottweilers for 25 years, competing at Westminster Kennel Club, the biggest dog show in the country.
Thank you, Jill Johnson, for sharing with us, and for sharing your leadership skills with the Women's Health Leadership TRUST.
