Featured TRUST Member
Laura (Green) Chaffee is Director of Hospital Based Physician Practices for HealthEast Care System. She is the administrator for the hospital medicine physician practices at HealthEast and the contract manager for the ED providers.
My team is responsible for operating the 24/7/365 hospital medicine services that are central to care at our four hospitals. We are responsible for ensuring excellent clinical and financial performance, patient experience and provider engagement while positioning the departments for continued and future success. I have also recently taken on some oversight of the mental health provider practices.
Have you ever had a mentor? How did he/she help you most?
Yes, I am very fortunate to have had many impactful and supportive mentors over the years. At different points in my career I have focused discussions with my mentors on different areas of leadership. These have included asking for feedback and acting on that feedback, developing self-awareness and navigating organizational restructuring and company culture. All of my mentors have provided a safe space for seeking advice on managing teams, colleagues and leaders.
In my current role at HealthEast and as my responsibilities have increased, my most recent mentor (through the TRUST Accelerate! program) has coached me through leading and managing major restructures. She has provided invaluable lessons in managing change, communicating effectively and building trust among teams.
Why did you join the TRUST? What keeps you involved as a TRUST member?
I joined the TRUST to meet other women in health care administration, share experiences and learn from each other. I really enjoyed participating in the Accelerate! Mentoring program recently. I enjoy attending the monthly programs and find the topics and speakers interesting and engaging.
What is the best career advice you've received?
Keep learning, keep pushing yourself outside your comfort zone, make connections across the organization and industry and find opportunities to gain diverse and interesting experience.
What support do you need now to evolve your development as a leader?
I need to be ready for the constant changes in health care, and I need the ability to embrace changes as they come. I strive to be a strong leader for my teams even in times of uncertainty and ambiguity. I need to keep finding new opportunities to learn and grow my experience while being resilient and taking care of my own wellbeing.
How do you want to support other women in their leadership journeys?
Right now I am focusing on developing the women on my reporting team (I happen to have an all-women team at the moment. If I had any men on my reporting team, I would develop them too.) I would like to support my team members in growing their experience and identifying how they would like to grow professionally. I encourage the women on my team to take on new challenges, and I support them in exploring new opportunities.
I’m also ready, willing and able to pay back some of the mentoring I have received over the years.
Who or what inspires you?
My family inspires me. My husband is a great partner. He works hard for our family both at work and at home, and he inspires me to do the same. My two daughters (2.5 years and 5 months) inspire me to be a good mom and a good role model as they grow up. I want to show them that women can be professionals, leaders, mentors, change-makers, entrepreneurs and also great moms.
What is something that not many people know about you?
I love to make jam. My specialty is homemade strawberry jam from strawberries I’ve picked myself. Sometimes I experiment with other types of fruit. My dad is my taste tester and biggest jam fan (he has a bit of a sweet tooth.)
Any words of wisdom to live by?
“Our souls are not hungry for fame, comfort, wealth or power. Our souls are hungry for meaning, for the sense that we have figured out how to live so that our lives matter.” – Harold Kushner via becomingminimalist.com
