Janet Silversmith
CEO, Minnesota Medical Association

Key responsibilities:

I have many responsibilities as CEO of the Minnesota Medical Association (MMA), including:

  • Providing overall direction and leadership in the development, communication, and achievement of organizational goals and objectives to support MMA’s mission.
  • Overseeing advocacy initiatives with legislators, regulators, courts, and the public to positively influence actions that will provide the best environment for the mission and members of MMA.
  • Directing the recruitment and engagement of MMA members to provide appropriate representation of the physician community with a wide variety of constituencies.
  • Providing leadership and service, and collaboration with other related medical organizations and societies to promote the achievement of shared goals for the benefit of all members.

Have you ever had a mentor?

I never had a formal mentor, but have worked with a professional coach. Through the coaching experience, of which I was a bit skeptical to start, I gained valuable insight into my personality and communication style. I also learned how to be a more effective supervisor. Most importantly, the experience improved my confidence by affirming the value of my opinions and perspectives.

How do you want to support other women in their leadership journey?

In short, in any way I can. I believe there is tremendous benefit in sharing stories and experiences – hopefully something I’ve been through might ring true for someone else. I also think women leaders need the support of peers – to encourage and support them during challenging times and to recognize and celebrate the good times.

Why did you join the TRUST?

Despite a long career in health care, I’m a relatively new member of the TRUST. I joined because I believe in the value and power of membership organizations to build community and support professional growth. I also wanted to expand my network and explore ways I can give back to emerging leaders.

Who or what inspires you?

I’m consistently inspired by the members of our association who volunteer their time, expertise, and energy to improve the conditions for health for all Minnesotans.

Any words of wisdom to live by?

It’s always helped me, when going through both good and challenging times, to remember the sage advice of Winnie-the-Pooh: “You’re braver than you believe, and stronger and smarter than you think.”
