NAMI Minnesota (National Alliance on Mental Illness) presented a St. Cloud area partnership of agencies with its 2019 Criminal Justice Award at the NAMI Minnesota Annual Conference, held Nov. 2 in St. Paul. The award recognizes an individual or group in the area of criminal justice that has demonstrated through its action a strong commitment to the decriminalization of mental illnesses. The partnership in St. Cloud was created with the help of TRUST member Katy Kirchner of CentraCare; Katy was among those honored with a Collaboration and Partnerships Award at the 2019 TRUST Forum for her work on this effort.

“NAMI is pleased to recognize the collaborative partnership in St. Cloud that involves the Central Minnesota Mental Health Center, CentraCare Health, Stearns County Health and Human Services, and the St. Cloud Police Department,” said NAMI Executive Director Sue Abderholden.

“When the agencies came together to talk about their problems, they learned that they were seeing the very same people. A small number of people who were struggling with their mental illnesses or substance use disorders were actually high utilizers of services but not in an effective way.”

Abderholden continued, “These organizations decided that they could do better. Their action team identifies people who are touching multiple systems, helps them obtain insurance, clinical care, housing and whatever else people need. Outreach workers connect with these individuals and simply don’t give up on them. CentraCare provides mental health care in the jails. They are beginning to see results with lower numbers in the jail, detox and emergency room. Most importantly over 50 people have found housing and recovery.”
