Boat Cruise
August 10, 2010

The annual Networking on the Water boat cruise was another great success! We boarded the luxurious charter yacht, "Paradise Lady" which featured three open-air decks, and cruised the lovely Mississippi River during the most glorious time of the year in Minnesota.

The luxurious yacht will took us down the Mississippi and through the locks, as we reveled in the breathtaking views while networking with colleagues. We boarded at Boom Island and enjoyed food and beverages aboard this luxurious and spacious vessel. It was a great event!

A Model for Equitable Health Care: A Call to Action
March 25, 2010

Presented by: Elizabeth Anderson, J.D. - System Director, Cross Cultural Services

Our workforce, patient, and community demographics are significantly shifting.  The challenges of preparing providers to care for diverse populations, and of assuring that staff members reflect those populations, must be met in order to deliver equitable care. Equitable care gives rise to an inclusive environment where all patients receive high quality, culturally responsive care and all employees are engaged in achieving quality outcomes.  A commitment to equitable care also builds strong relationships, creates workplaces that are respectful and productive, and aligns with the Institute of Medicine’s aims for moving health care into the future.  Are you and your organization ready to answer this call to action?

Guest Speaker: Elizabeth Anderson, J.D. - System Director, Cross Cultural Services, HealthEast Care System. Elizabeth has spent the past 25 years helping individuals from a variety of backgrounds begin anew. She has worked in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, handling assignments including directing refugee camp operations in Thailand, working as a political asylum officer with the United States Justice Department, managing international services for a Twin Cities hospital, developing strategies to serve Minnesota refugees through the Minnesota State Department of Human Services, and launching programs in diverse communities that deal with financial and personal wellness. Elizabeth was born in Taipei, Taiwan and raised in Thailand. She holds a B.A. in business and criminal justice from Gustavus Adolphus College and a Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law..

The Coming Age Wave: Opportunities and Challenges
February 18, 2010

Minnesota - along with the rest of the country and the world - is edging closer to an historic and permanent demographic shift in the age of our population. These changes will affect every corner of society, and have implications for individuals, families, communities, health and long-term care organizations, employers, and all levels of government. The state has initiated a project called Transform 2010 that has identified five themes for necessary action in preparation for the coming age wave. The current health care reform debate is an example of the discussions that need to occur as we prepare for a much older society.

Speaker: LaRhae Grindal Knatterud, has worked on the issues surrounding this demographic change for the past 10 years, and has spent her career studying and developing aging policy and programs in the Metro area and at the state level. Highlights of her program include:

  • The specific demographic facts and figures in Minnesota, and some of the key trends that baby boomers are creating to completely redefine aging as we know it.
  • How these population changes will affect individuals, families, and communities, and how each of us need to prepare for our own aging.
  • Specific actions that are needed to prepare as a society for this change, and how you can position your organization to survive and thrive as the age wave hits.

Annual American Heart Association's Go Red for WomenHoliday Party & Charity Event
December 15, 2009

A great time was had at The new Maple Grove Hospital which will officially open on December 30, 2009. Attendees took advantage of this great opportunity to tour the new facility before it opened, met the leadership team of Maple Grove and heard about the vision of this magnificent healthcare facility. It was also a great opportunity to network with colleagues, celebrate the holidays and support a great cause - "Go Red for Women"; view the flyer.

What's Your Purse-onality?
Over $2000 was raised during the “Purse-onalities” live auction which featured handbags representing the personalities of seven TRUST board members: Sheila Riggs, Dee Thibodeau, Cathy Barr, Carol Kraft, Chris Gibson, Janet Stacey and Kathy Orner. Each bag was filled with items our donors loved and were valued between $200 - $500. Proceeds benefited "Go Red For Women" a national movement founded by the American Heart Association to help fight back against the No. 1 killer of American women: heart disease and stroke.

Architectural Form Follows Function:  Designing & Building Healthcare Today
November 17, 2009

“Architectural Form Follows Function:  Designing & Building Healthcare Today” was the November 2009 program offered by the Women’s Healthcare Leadership Trust

Our presenters were Carol Tappen, Director of Operations for the Park Nicollet Melrose Institute, an eating disorders treatment facility and Jessica Vogel, the architect who helped to fulfill the Institute’s vision.
Carol and Jennifer offered their unique perspectives on this project’s history and evolution.  Beginning in 2005, the goal was two-fold: 1) to build a specialty services healthcare facility incorporating the Lean Flow principles of value and efficiency with no waste and 2) to do so within a healthcare environment that fosters safety and healing. Today, the Melrose Institute helps thousands of patients and families each year in an efficient, purposeful manner.

To achieve their desired results, the Institute followed the seven flows of medicine:

  • patients
  • providers
  • medications
  • supplies
  • information
  • equipment
  • process engineering

It focused on creating a curriculum of care instead of a continuum of care; the team built a new process, not simply a bricks and mortar structure.  More than two dozen individuals spent one week dedicated to seeing how the Lean Flow process would form the foundation of their new facility.

The team partnered with the architect to make sure goals were understood, needs and wants were clarified, and that the entire process was rooted in transparency.

Carol’s and Jennifer’s description of how a business case was built for this undertaking gave everyone pause as to how healthcare can think outside the box, look to change a “business as usual” approach, and enjoy a savings of both time and money.
