The Coming Age Wave: Opportunities and Challenges February 18, 2010
Minnesota - along with the rest of the country and the world - is edging closer to an historic and permanent demographic shift in the age of our population. These changes will affect every corner of society, and have implications for individuals, families, communities, health and long-term care organizations, employers, and all levels of government. The state has initiated a project called Transform 2010 that has identified five themes for necessary action in preparation for the coming age wave. The current health care reform debate is an example of the discussions that need to occur as we prepare for a much older society.
Speaker: LaRhae Grindal Knatterud, has worked on the issues surrounding this demographic change for the past 10 years, and has spent her career studying and developing aging policy and programs in the Metro area and at the state level. Highlights of her program include:
- The specific demographic facts and figures in Minnesota, and some of the key trends that baby boomers are creating to completely redefine aging as we know it.
- How these population changes will affect individuals, families, and communities, and how each of us need to prepare for our own aging.
- Specific actions that are needed to prepare as a society for this change, and how you can position your organization to survive and thrive as the age wave hits.
A program hosted by the Women’s Health Leadership Trust in partnership with LifeScience Alley:

Architectural Form Follows Function: Designing & Building Healthcare Today November 17, 2009
“Architectural Form Follows Function: Designing & Building Healthcare Today” was the November 2009 program offered by the Women’s Healthcare Leadership Trust
Our presenters were Carol Tappen, Director of Operations for the Park Nicollet Melrose Institute, an eating disorders treatment facility and Jessica Vogel, the architect who helped to fulfill the Institute’s vision. Carol and Jennifer offered their unique perspectives on this project’s history and evolution. Beginning in 2005, the goal was two-fold: 1) to build a specialty services healthcare facility incorporating the Lean Flow principles of value and efficiency with no waste and 2) to do so within a healthcare environment that fosters safety and healing. Today, the Melrose Institute helps thousands of patients and families each year in an efficient, purposeful manner.
To achieve their desired results, the Institute followed the seven flows of medicine:
- patients
- providers
- medications
- supplies
- information
- equipment
- process engineering
It focused on creating a curriculum of care instead of a continuum of care; the team built a new process, not simply a bricks and mortar structure. More than two dozen individuals spent one week dedicated to seeing how the Lean Flow process would form the foundation of their new facility.
The team partnered with the architect to make sure goals were understood, needs and wants were clarified, and that the entire process was rooted in transparency.
Carol’s and Jennifer’s description of how a business case was built for this undertaking gave everyone pause as to how healthcare can think outside the box, look to change a “business as usual” approach, and enjoy a savings of both time and money.

May 28, 2009 Annual Meeting and 30th Anniversary Celebration at Midland Hills Country Club in Roseville
Members gathered for the 30th Anniversary Celebration and Annual Meeting during which the Jean Harris Award Winner was announced - Kaye Foley.
The Jean Harris Award was established in 2001 in honor of Jean Harris, a leader in health care who was known for making a difference in the health of our communities. Jean was a physician, the former mayor of Eden Prairie, and a member of the TRUST. She was described as visionary, a person of great integrity and a stellar example of the best in public leadership.
Purpose of Award: The essence of this award is to provide the TRUST the opportunity to recognize one of its colleagues for outstanding contributions in health care leadership. The impact of the contributions should extend beyond the TRUST and the individual’s environment of practice. They should be known for providing influence beyond their immediate surroundings.
