The TRUST Grows UP…
As a twenty-six year old organization, the Women’s Health Leadership Trust shares a number of characteristics with a young adult…

• Like young adults, we alternate between stable and transition periods (we “plateau” and then we grow)
• We are developing new life structures (e.g., our strategic plan)
• We must learn that doing things our parents’ (founders’?) way won’t assure us of success

And, maybe most important of all, we learn to discard the illusion that life is simple, controllable, and there are no contradictions. We are learning to say “should” less often and try to refrain from lamenting “that’s not fair!”

Our May Annual Meeting was an upbeat opportunity to officially celebrate our passage into our 26th year. We had the opportunity to express our gratitude to women who have helped pave the way for the TRUST to become a significant organization for so many leaders in health care.

Just like “twenty-some year olds” , as an organization we are stretching and growing to find our way for how the TRUST can best support, develop, and promote women in 2006 and beyond. Our world has changed in many ways in the last quarter of century. One thing that hasn’t changed is the opportunity to tap into women’s talents to help meet the growing needs and challenges in the health care field.

Young adulthood is a time to find mutually satisfying relationships. We hope that being a member of the TRUST is a mutually satisfying relationship for you! I encourage you to participate, attend events, and invite a colleague or friend to join the TRUST today.

Jan Malcolm Receives the Jean Harris Award

At the May 31st annual meeting, Mary Brainerd – last year’s recipient – presented Jan Malcolm with the Jean Harris Award of Excellence. Jan was nominated for the award because of her career achievements and contributions to the TRUST. Jan has shown excellence in leadership in health career and is an outstanding public policy advocate. Throughout her career she has demonstrated a passion for serving the underserved. Jan is chief executive office of Courage Center, a nonprofit rehabilitation and resource center for people with disabilities, brain injuries, speech or vision impairments, and hearing loss. Since 1928, Courage Center has offered comprehensive rehabilitation, vocational, camping and sports and recreation services to people of all ages.

Jan was recently named to the first hospital board of Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc., the county’s subsidiary corporation that will operate Hennepin County Medical Center starting next year. The board includes 10 citizens with extensive experience in health care, business, urban community development, workforce development and philanthropy.

In March, the Minnesota Medical Association named Jan to a new partnership: the Healthy Minnesota Steering Committee. The group is composed of Minnesota leaders in health care, business, state government, labor, education and consumer advocacy who have come together to recommend and implement strategies for statewide health care reform.

Eleven other exceptional women in health care preceded Jan in receiving the Jean Harris Award of Excellence. In addition to 2005 awardee Mary Brainerd, they include Margie Jamieson, Jean Harris herself (before the award was renamed to honor her posthumously), Karen Strueve, Katherine Gray, Nancy Feldman, Patricia Riley, Jan Cronquist, Ann Robinow, Jeannine Bayard, and Terri Hyduke.
